In this post, I’ll share my experience of being muted on Instagram and why it is a big deal.
Earlier this week, someone muted me on Instagram. I retaliated by screenshotting the action and posting the evidence to Instagram’s community standards page. All of my followers saw the post.

The service, which is owned by Facebook, offers several tools to optimize and customize the user experience in its apps, and one of those features is called Mute.
What happens when you mute on Instagram?
Instagram allows users to mute posts and Stories from others, as well as calls and message notifications. Muted posts prevent them from appearing in your feed, and muted posts move them down the list. Turning off call or message notifications prevents Instagram from sending you call or message notifications. If you turn off the sound on Instagram, the person you’re talking to won’t receive any notifications. Disconnecting also doesn’t unsubscribe you from that person’s profile, you just don’t get updates on that person’s messages, calls and notifications anymore. So there is no clear way to know if someone is muted. However, there are signs that the connection is broken. If another person suddenly stops responding to your posts, stories and messages – like, respond or react. To find out if they are active on Instagram, you can see if they like or comment on other people’s posts. Even if you’re muted, you can still see the messages and stories of the person you’re talking to, message them or call them. They won’t see your posts or stories in the feed, but they can visit your profile to view them. They don’t get notifications when you send them messages or call them, but they see them in their inbox.
