Design
So the design team claim that this product is the result of decades of research and development, and I couldn't agree more. It was literally exactly what I thought when using it, the design team just took everything that was wrong with all the similar priced products and fixed them and brought all the strengths together. The only mistake I think the developers made was putting such a low price on it.
The Whaferdale Diamond 240 boasts improved speaker components, woven Kevlar woofers, perfectly adjusted crossovers, modernized bass plus treble units, and a slot-loaded port all come together to make a near impeccable sound. But what the Diamond 240 does best is that it allows its users to sit back, relax, and concentrate on what really matters – their favourite music.
So a lot of research and development has gone into the construction of the cabinet, although Whaferdale have produced excellent cabinets in more expensive ranges, they have tried to pass on the near resonance eradicated cabinet constructions that has made other product ranges famous. I am happy to report that they have succeeded, a consolidation of paricleboard and MDF has replicated the success of other cabinets. The Diamond 240 has almost no resonances at high frequency and the cabinet construction also stops internal sound leakage. I am happy to report that noise produced by the cabinet walls is a slow as 35dB south of the driver output.
If you are struggling to understand all that, basically they have given us a more expensive construction for cheaper.
Setup and listening
A quick note on appearance, I have reviewed more beautiful speakers but these speakers are far from ugly. They sit nicely in my sitting room but might not look well with some other pieces of furniture, depending on your living space. Anyway down to whats important, Although all ranges are excellent, I feel the mid range is particularly excels. Maybe that is a result of increased magnet sizes, semi-elliptical break up areas on the woven Kevlar woofer or the fact that the Diamond 240 uses a pure fabric dome and a modernized ferrite magnet infrastructure which works in conjunction with a beautifully made waveguide. This helps a sleek transition from the mids and the tweeter around the crossover phase, which results in a near perfect coherent sound between drivers.
If you're struggling to understand all of this terminology then let me summarize it for you, as speakers transition between different types of sounds it sometimes doesn't transition well as the responsibility for producing the sound switches between particular devices. However the Diamond 240 has the latest technology to ensure smooth switching. All this wrapped up in an attractive price tag. This is certainly the speaker of choice for me (and I have reviewed quite a few).
Conclusion
As stated above this is certainly my favorite speaker that I have reviewed, it has excelled in all ranges which make it a perfect all rounder. The cabinet is constructed with a beautiful combination of particleboard and MDF which help it eradicate resonances, even at super high frequencies.
Trust me when I say, for this price you are getting technology and research that costs waaaaay more. This is decades of research in one beautiful machine.
