Why we chose this stereo amplifier:
With its big and bold sound, the Peachtree Audio Nova offers an impressive punch for such a small package. According to this article, this amp deftly combines crisp highs with a gorgeous ripping bass to enable you to enjoy your music the way that it’s meant to sound. The on-board digital analogue converter from ESS leaves those with amps that cost twice the price feeling jealous of the sound quality on offer from the Peachtree Audio Nova. Audiophiles will especially appreciate the softening on older harsher recordings, which sounds crisp and fresh through this amp.
As with previous iterations of the Nova from Peachtree, one thing that really impresses us about this system is how well it copes with playback at maximum volume. There is no distortion to speak of, even with the dial all the way up to 11. Overall, the main appeal of this system is that it offers the same audio quality of a much more expensive amp. You would be hard pressed to find another system that offers the same level of value or quality. If you are looking for a quality amp to cut your teeth on before moving on to something more expensive, this could well be it.

The CXA 61 is one of the more expensive options on this list, but it is also by far one of the best. The CXA 61 offers consumers a full range of digital and analogue inputs, making hooking the amp up to any home system as easy as can be. Not only this, but the unit itself is beautifully designed and looks sleek and elegant, easily slotting into any home setup.
Using the amp is also a much more pleasant experience than many of its competitors, thanks to its superbly designed and intuitive interface. It takes very little time to get up and running with the CXA 61 and once you are there, there is lots to like about the system.
The only real drawback to this system is its huge price tag. There’s no getting around the fact that this is a pricey amp system in spite of the quality of its internal components. If money is no object and you just want the best sound possible, Cambridge Audio is certainly one of the first businesses you should consider.
In addition to featuring all of the usual inputs and outputs that you would expect from a high-end stereo amplifier. The Cambridge Audio CXA61 also features Bluetooth functionality for more modern setups.

This amp from Onkyo comes from their respected A9 line. The A9 line of amps has been popular for a number of years now; previous models have also featured on many lists of the best amplifier systems for the year of their release. Most of the newer versions of the A9 that are released are iterative, featuring slightly improved internal circuitry over their predecessors. In the case of the A-9110, Onkyo has proven that it is possible to get excellent and robust sound quality for less than $300.
The culmination of all of the small improvements that Onkyo has made over the years can be heard in the A-9110. For the price that you pay, this is definitely one of the best value amps on the market. There are other budget models in the same price range, but few of them can compete with this one on sound quality. One thing we do wish was different, was that the Onkyo appears to have no inbuilt DAC. This means that you’ll need a separate converter for many setups, although they shouldn’t add significantly to your costs.
However, with that one minor quibble set aside, the A-9110 is one of our favorite budget amps and represents a major leap forward for the budget home amp market.

If you have even a passing affection for the retro-futurist style, then the PS Audio Sprout100 is one of the best amps that you will find on the market. We just absolutely adore the look of this thing; it impresses us before we’ve even switched it on. Fortunately, the audio sprout is definitely not a case of style over substance. Once you get it up and running, the audio quality is fantastic for the price range.
The most high-end sound systems will probably require something a little beefier. However, for smaller setups and for people’s first home stereo setups, this is an excellent starting amp that will enable you to quickly learn the ropes.
This is also an excellent amp for powering secondary sound systems. If you have a main high-end sound system in your home, and then another supplementary one in another room, this amp is an excellent choice for the latter setup. If you’ve spent the money on high-end speaker equipment, this isn’t the right amp to get the most out of it. But anything in the mid to high-end range should be able to feel the benefits.
